How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT
When a customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation, the model assembles an answer from what the web says about you. You can influence that. Here's the practical checklist we run for clients, in the order that moves the needle.
- State plainly on every page what you do, who it's for, and where you do it, then back the prose with schema markup.
- Keep your name, services, and service area identical everywhere; inconsistency reads as uncertainty, and uncertain businesses don't get cited.
- Build one honest, specific page per real customer question, and let detailed reviews corroborate what your site claims.
- You can't pay to be recommended. You earn it, then re-ask the assistants monthly and track what moved.
1. Make your business machine-legible
Every important page should state, in plain sentences, what you do, who it's for, and where you do it. Assistants can't recommend what they can't parse. "Emergency furnace repair for homes across Livonia and the western suburbs" beats "comfort solutions for the modern family" every single time.
Back the prose with schema markup: your organization, services, service area, and FAQs, all in structured data. This is the difference between a machine guessing what you do and knowing.
2. Say the same thing everywhere
AI systems cross-check. If your name, phone, address, services, and service area differ between your site, Google Business Profile, and the major directories, you read as uncertain, and uncertain businesses don't get cited. An entity cleanup (boring, unglamorous, effective) is often the single best early move.
3. Answer real questions on your site
Assistants are answer engines, so pages shaped as answers get cited. Build content around the questions customers actually ask: what things cost, how long they take, what to do in an emergency, how to choose between options. One honest, specific page per question beats one bloated page per keyword.
4. Let reviews corroborate you
Models weigh third-party evidence. A steady stream of detailed reviews (the kind that mention the service and the town, not just five stars) corroborates everything your site claims. A systematic ask-after-every-job review engine feeds both Google rankings and AI answers from the same effort.
5. Monitor and iterate
Ask the assistants your customers' questions monthly and log the answers. Models update, competitors move, and answers shift. Treat it like rank tracking for the AI era, because that's exactly what it is.
Common questions
How long does it take to show up in AI answers?
Entity and schema fixes can reflect within weeks as systems re-crawl; authority building compounds over months, just like SEO. Early movers in uncontested local niches often see themselves cited surprisingly fast.
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. Organic answer visibility is earned through clarity, consistency, and corroboration, which is good news for local businesses competing against bigger ad budgets.
Does this help my Google rankings too?
Yes, nearly everything on this checklist is also excellent local SEO. The two disciplines feed each other.
